Isolating Genres

While it may be interesting to see what personality traits correlate with the appeal of say real-time games or graphical violence, it is difficult to draw convincing conclusions this way because many of the elements are strongly tied to specific game genres and it would be much more useful to try to correlate personality traits to game genres.

Using a factor analysis, 6 main factors were extracted. This was done so I had a good sense of what cluster of elements correlated with each other. Thus, I ended up with 6 clusters of elements that correlated with each other, while the clusters themselves were as independent from each other as possible.

Here are the 6 factors presented with the elements that they are composed of. The elements in bold are the strongest elements of each factor. They correspond fairly well to established gaming genres.

I am uncertain exactly what the last factor represents. It seems to point to games that are strategical simulations of real-life experiences, particularly on war and technology. It may include games such as Panzar General, Capitalism, as well as Command and Conquer. This may be the real-time strategy genre, but again I am not certain. The second factor seems to be TBS games of the Civilization or Master of Orion vein which focus on building, so this last factor may well be the RTS or TBS games that focus more on combat.
