Guild Name GeneratorHave a great group for a guild but can't come up with a good name? At PARC's PlayOn group, we found a basic grammar that was able to correctly parse about 90% of guild names we collected from a 3-month period in World of Warcraft over 5 servers (~22,000 guild names). You can find a detailed description of the grammar here. This allowed us to create a guild name generator that used the grammar to create new guild names based on the weighted vocabulary of World of Warcraft guild names. It would be interesting to see the results drawn from other games. The WoW results seem biased toward "dark" and "brooding" and violent names. Or maybe that's a limitation of the grammar used. Posted by: Powers on October 20, 2007 8:34 AM

Overall, I think the random names generated lack something in the inspiration aspect. The best guild names imo are always something that means more than the words themselves. For instance, Addiction, or variations thereof, is a great hardcore guild name by labeling themselves as their opponents greatest criticism. One guild named Addiction actually says in their recruitment forum, "We have no lives and we don't care about your life." One of my favorite named on my first WoW server was a guild named Geriatrics - all applicants had to have either kids or an actual job. Other guild names can show a sense of humor. I ran a guild named Jinxed, so named because of the habitual wiping to trash mobs only to one-shot the bosses. I've seen a guild known as Keepers of the Groove and other names that indicated that the guild was a relaxed, laid back group. Then there are guilds with thematic names. I'm currently GM of a guild named iHorde (a guild for iToons, which has an iPod theme and uses the concept of each character as a "toon" from the Ender's Game novel by Orson Scott Card. Ranks are colors, to go along with the color-coding of items and thematically tie into the different iPod colors. Ranks in order from highest to lowest are: Special Edition iToon (GM), iToon Pro, Gold (Legendary) iToon, Purple (Epic) iToon, Blue iToon, Green iToon, White iToon (Trial), Gray iToon (Probation). I believe a great meaningful guild name is also very important for a guild. It should give the guild member a vision of their purpose. It should be compelling enough for someone to consider enquiring about joining your guild. I started a guild on an EQ2 PVP server named midlife crisis and realized it wasn't what folks want. I changed it to something else and now folks are asking to join left and right. As a guild we are doing nothing different than what we were doing in the old guild. Yes, GOOD guild names are meaningful. However, coming from a server where we have such inspired guild names as 'wold of warcraft' and 'knights of hord'.... I don't think most of the random guildnames are very unrealistic. Posted by: Alista on November 1, 2007 5:24 PM

Wow. I am not a player of MMORPG's, but this guild name generator is pretty awesome. Yes, it is pretty entertaining when your guild name has some meaning behind it, but when you get names like Dragons of the Lollipop Rangers, The Swords of Baller Raiders, and Assassins of Underpanty Gnome Assassins, it just gets pretty hilarious. I have to agree, some of the best guild names I have either been in, or seen have had some ulterior thought or meaning behind them. I had 2 favorites, one of them was called THEY (or was it THEM) .. basically we were the ones that said whatever it was that "They say... ". The other one was in EQ1, and it was an acronym (one that I wish I could remember) that basically slammed SOE and their customer service record/game content but with some creative thinking could be translated into something totally innocent. Some of the best guild names are very meaningful not to the people who join as members but to that core group who created the guild in the first place. I am currently in the proces of starting another guild on the Darkspear server of WoW... Anyway, I needed a guild for my alts on antoher server and I decided with a realife friend of mine that our name needed to be humorous thus "Product of Modern Sci" was born. having said this I agree with the above posts, the name generator is great for alittle something to laugh at but TRUELY good guildnames come from... well some part of your body that you have but probly dont know about becuase you spend all your time on MMORPGs For those who donot see the duel comedy of my alt guild's name, Read the CAPITAL letters out loud, then realise that the name as a who, side from the initials is a stab at the modern science which spawned the computer, internet, and ultimately all of us lifeless hopefulls (myself included) Posted by: Bullboy on April 25, 2008 10:05 AM

On my server on EQ(1) we had until recently the quite uber guild "Precision Strike" and their applicant guild "Near Miss". Was never a member of either, but loved the names and the pointed humour behind. I believe they moved to some other game.
