PlayOn Census Data

Imagine if we could take a census of WoW every 15 minutes and build longitudinal profiles of players. The resulting data set would let us answer many interesting questions. Do certain classes level faster than others? How long does it take on average to get to level 60? Do characters in guilds spend more time playing the game than characters not in guilds.

This is the data set that a group at PARC has been gathering and analyzing. We've gathered data from over 70,000 characters and are presenting some of the findings at the PlayOn Blog. If you like numbers, charts, and stats, you'll enjoy going through the findings that have accumulated. Here are some quick highlight pointers to get you started exploring the data:

1) It takes on average 20 full days of playing time for a character to get from level 1 to level 60. That's 60 full work-days or 3 full work months (since we'd get weekends off in a work month).
2) Druids and Paladins are the slowest levelers. Shamans, Rogues, Mages, and Priests are the fastest levelers.
3) Characters in guilds do not spend more time playing each week than characters not in guilds.
4) Characters in guilds do not level faster than characters not in guilds.
5) Warlocks and Hunters are least likely to be grouped. Priests and Druids are most likely to be grouped.

WoW.

This is some facinating sh...shizzle.

I don't feel so bad being a "loner" now and not "getting a good guild" however you define "good".

Very cool data, man. I'll be pouring over this for days.

I find it difficult to believe that NOT being in a guild (a good one, mind you) doesn't impact your experience gain. Pick-up groups typically do not last very long and soloing will not get you that shiny new +25 INT/STA/STR/etc... piece of gear you'll wish you had when a 50+ elite mob is eating your face. How are these stats being deduced?

hmmm... im warlock in Stormreaver and i have almost always been invited to a group (44 level). Only couple has not invited me... The most NOT wanted i might say is hunters... although thats odd, cause they are pretty good damagers. Im guessing that why im usually invited is because of these spells: Ritual of summoning, Curse of recklesness, Summon Imp, Create soulstone and healtstone

I beat the odds, 60 Pally in 16 days. Now with over 1200 hours of play time I have come to understand the classes. I can says that Hunters are the best class overall.

This site helps really see demograghic profiling and sheds light into motivations and lifestyle of the players. I find it funny, we all fit so nicely in the bubble on the charts.

Sheesh, I believe i have more playtime than that and still am not 60. But most of the time that I do play I just sit around talking.

Part of the reason hunters and warlocks are least likely to group is because they have pets, wouldn't you think?

This is interesting; the conventional wisdom is that hunters are the fastest levelers.

Or perhaps hunter is the most optimal leveling class, but the personalities that play it don't take advantage of the class's abilities.

I know on my own server, the first person to 60 was a Hunter. Similarly, on the "Race to 50" contest server, the first few dozen people were all Hunters.

Odd... I found my paladin levelled much faster than my priest. Died a lot less, too ^_^;

I'd say the reason "good" guilds, or guilds in general do not effect your experience gain/leveling is that in WoW, there is no purpose to a guild until you reach your max-level (i.e. no longer gaining experience) and are raiding / dungeon'ing.
As mentioned before in "I don't get the guilds don't factor towards XP"...guilds are for gaining gear, and end-game purposes only in WoW, which the game is leaning towards as it's only purpose anyway.

The negative stereotypes associated with hunters in groups (of rolling on everything that drops) could have a factor on the likelyhood of them getting a group.
It's also interesting to note about how druid specs at levels 10-60 are quite flexible. Balance can dps and heal reasonably, feral can tank and dps and resto, well, they just heal and that's usually enough to get a group.

On guilding/grouping a toon. For my play time and style I find grouping quite a hinderance. I have limited time to play and being goal oriented I want to maximize my time playing to reach my goal. Being a 58 y/o self employed male may have some influence in my play style....think?? Both of my main toons are good healer and I'm constantly asked to join a group and I do feel bad sometimes turning down all the invites to go heal everyone else while they do their quest :/ .
